Collection Notes: Layer'd's Summery Nonchalance
Discover the first arrivals from Layer'd Spring/Summer 2021, 'Re-Emergence'.

Poetically entitled ‘Re-Emergence’, Layer’d’s Spring/Summer 2021 collection represents a re-birth for the Melbourne-based label – a return to a pure, undiluted reflection of the Layer’d woman.
The collection embraces a meditative slowness, effectively conveying a sense of happy freedom necessitated by a time of reflection during lockdowns in 2020. “2020 offered us a time to reflect on our lifestyles and all that we are grateful for. A coming home, a time of rest, to listen carefully and reconnect.”

Lightness and colour are de facto summer must haves but with ‘Re-Emergence’ Creative Director, Rani Hallums, flexes her design prowess with a sophisticated balance of form and volume, achieving a summery nonchalance.
There is a remarkable softness to the collection that is achieved through the considered use of draping, an effect that is aided by the inherent fluidity of Layer’d’s signature Japanese Technical Airflow fabric that falls organically over the frame. It is through this remarkable softness that Hallums’ Layer’d woman – a constant source of inspiration for the designer – finds a fashionable confidence in femininity and inherent strength.
The collection is imbedded in high quality basics, juxtaposed with exuberant pops of colour and print, punctuating contemporary silhouettes. Displaying her penchant for eye-catching patterns, Hallums’ first highlight print of the season is a multi-coloured confetti print that summons a suitably warm-weather mood.

As ever, colour plays a crucial role in the development of the collection. ‘Re-Emergence’ begins with a palette of rich earthy pinks and browns, soft roses, and crisp whites – a “grounded start to the spring season” – before transitioning into cooler mint and blue tones in the later part of the collection, slated to launch throughout September and October.

The minimalist architecture of the campaign set – brilliantly spare; and a reference to the blank slate from which ‘Re-Emergence’ was born – highlights the bright colours and refined use of volume seen throughout the collection.

As a label whose inspiration is taken almost entirely from its customers, there is a sense of an ever-changing growth and evolution that propels the label, propelling its designs, to new levels each season.
