Californian bohemian spirit

A global vision informs each Johnny Was design, juxtaposing vintage and modern styles, reserved and unrestrained, traditional and innovative.

Johnny Was

Johnny Was was founded in Los Angeles in 1987 by Eli Levite, who named the label after the Bob Marley and the Wailers song and built it on bohemian-spirited tunics finished with artisan embroidery and painterly prints. Nearly four decades on, the house signature is unchanged: swirling florals and hand-finished embroidery across featherweight silk shirts, kimonos and velvet outerwear, now joined by stretch bamboo-jersey pieces that carry the label's Californian ease into everyday dressing.

The Forme is an Australian online destination for Johnny Was. Our curated collection favours the pieces that do their work quietly: reversible kimonos in jackets and coats, embroidered tees and relaxed crews in T-Shirts & Camis and the Janie jersey dresses our customers wear on rotation. A kimono thrown over VERGE's Acrobat pant is the fastest route from airport to dinner we know. New pieces arrive in New Arrivals each season.
