Creative Director, Gosia Piątek claims “I don’t like the idea of not knowing and am that person that questions it all.” It is this yearning for clarity across the entire process of creation–from design through to manufacturing and production–that led Piątek to create the mono-fibre label Kowtow. With circular design, transparent manufacturing, and responsible business practices forming the pillars of the label, the New Zealand-based project was built as a value-driven brand from the ground up.

Proudly traceable from seed-to-garment, each Kowtow garment begins at small Fairtrade farms where rows of rain-fed cotton grow without the use of harmful, toxic chemicals and fertilisers. From there, the 100% Fairtrade organic cotton is treated, dyed, and made into garments at certified factories in India. The brand regularly audits and inspects the manufactory process to ensure the highest ethical and environmental standards.

For Kowtow, each collection is a stepping stone towards a healthier planet and a fairer world. “It is important to come up with new sustainability innovations to protect what is the most important,” Piątek says. “There is no Planet B.” As of January 2024, new Kowtow Fairtrade organic cotton garments are plastic-free–a milestone accomplishment that is a testimony to the brand’s enduring and unwavering commitment to growth towards a more sustainable future.

Every detail of a Kowtow garment is carefully considered, down to the finest details, like the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 approved organic cotton branded labels sewn at the neck of every style, and the Oeko-Tex Standard 100 approved shell buttons used for the brand’s cult-favourite button-down shirts. The name, ‘Kowtow’, is derived from the Chinese word ‘koutou’–a word defining the Chinese custom to bow as a sign of respect; a concept extended and encapsulated when executing the creation of its collections.

Each Kowtow garment embodies ease, versatility, practicality, and timeless design.
