Silk Laundry’s designs are what minimalist dreams are made of; simple elegance with quality woven in every thread.
This 1996 Dress gets its name and inspiration from the iconic midnight-blue slip dress worn by Princess Diana at the 1996 Met Gala in New York.
Cut on the bias from pure silk that’s been sand-washed for a matte shimmer, this stunning women’s slip dress will pick up beautifully in the low evening light. It has a flattering round neckline and thin spaghetti straps that can be adjusted for a comfortable fit.
A study in movement and heat, the “Dancing Lady” print channels the flirtation and flourish of its namesake orchid. Splashed across a dark, sultry base, fiery orange blooms seem to sway mid-dance–layered and full of motion, like flamenco in full swing. Each petal arcs and twirls with painterly precision, creating a rhythmic pattern that feels both spontaneous and deliberate.
This print is an extension of the Wonderland narrative, celebrating nature’s dramatic flair and its uncanny ability to perform. Here, Silk Laundry leans into the theatrical, pairing the floral’s bold curves with rich tones of crimson and coral, set against moody depths for maximum contrast.
Cut in a fluid silhouette that drape and skim with ease, the “Dancing Lady” print offers a sultry counterpoint to the collection’s more whimsical illusions–perfect for evenings that begin with elegance and end in motion.
With such a classic silhouette, Silk Laundry’s 1996 Dress is an investment that you'll wear season after season.

After Katie Kolodinski found difficulty locating a classic slip dress that was made from natural fibres, she created Silk Laundry. Most slips the designer could find were made from polyester or nylon, both of which do not have a positive effect on our planet. In 2015, it was from this desire for a well-crafted, consciously drawn staple, that led Silk Laundry to launch its capsule collection of five styles: a '90s style slip dress, a cami, a t-shirt, a pair of shorts, and a button-up classic shirt.
After anchoring its launch to the ‘90s Silk Slip Dress, and with this item remaining a key component of the label's core staples to this day, Silk Laundry chose to expand their sumptuous range. The mission remains the same: create long-lasting, well-crafted wardrobe staples that encourage conscious consumerism and easy, endless styling opportunities.
Reflected in the brand name; Silk Laundry, the label is suggestive of quality and care at the forefront of its focus; high-quality, natural fibres that care for you, and the planet. Priding itself on creating accessible, essential pieces of luxury without the overproduction that clogs up the fashion industry, Silk Laundry reveals four seasonal collections a year. By encompassing the five styles that heralded the launch of the label, a refreshed ‘Uniform’ capsule collection remains a mainstay, with a single new colourway added each year. Small runs of seasonal colours, shapes, and prints are revealed as part of quarterly drops, designed to pair with pieces from ‘Uniform’, and elevate your carefully curated closet. It is through this model that Kolodinski can remain relevant, without producing unnecessary, excess clothing.
Silk Laundry is the go-to brand for sleek, comfortable, polished essentials that segue easily from day to night–think women’s silk shirts, blazers, pants, skirts and the ‘90s Silk Slip Dress where their classic styles all began.
