Since its inception in Catalonia in the 1970s, complimenting the natural beauty of Australian and Italian landscapes has been a lodestone for Estilo Emporio. Bridging the aesthetics of the two countries has since been an ongoing focus for the label that now calls Sydney its home.

Head designer Mardee McDonough’s launchpad for spring/summer ’22–entitled ‘Nomada,’ Basque for ‘Nomad’–is a focus on impermanence, movement, and joy. The Estilo woman for the season is a global wanderer–perhaps a reaction to two years of closed borders that has prevented McDonough from working directly with the label’s artisan partners in Positano, Italy, where each individual garment is skilfully handcrafted.

The collection embraces a worldly sophistication with McDonough’s typical Bohemian, nonchalant aesthetic reverberating through the designs. Drawing on traditional crafts and artisanal techniques from all over the Amalfi Coast, new season woven flax patterns ‘Marrakesh’ and ‘Casablanca’ feature flashes of bold blues, yellows, pinks, and searing citrus, immediately stimulating and uplifting the senses.

The fascinating synergy between the boldness of Italian design, combined with the laid-back attitude inherent to the Australian psyche, allows the label to balance extravagant proportions; dramatically fluted sleeves, tiered and gathered skirts, with the ethereal fragility of hand-loomed linen.

It is this tension between design and fabrication that embodies the true essence of the label’s nomadic seasonal mood. The clothing is designed to move, embracing the smooth elegance of immaculate fluidity.

The open-net weave linen anticipates a lightness, as distinguished in ‘Rete Azure’ blue, that allows a breathing space alongside the heavily detailed dresses and softly tailored pants. Enveloping proportions fuse relaxed styling and signature high-quality design, making the ordinary extraordinary, resulting in wardrobe pieces that are perpetually relevant.
